Local Activities
There are numerous activities in Matamata and surrounding districts to suit all types.
GOLF -Matamata & Walton golf courses are both attractive 18-hole courses. There are 7 golf courses within 30min drive.
TRAMPING -The district offers numerous walks for all ages. The two-stage walk to view the Wairere Falls, which is set amongst the bush of the Kaimai Ranges. Each stage takes about 45 minutes to reward you with spectacular views of the falls and the whole district.
HOT MINERAL POOLS -Drive 3 minutes to the Opal Hot Springs or 25 minutes drive to the Te Aroha Mineral Spa Bath House for a private spa.
HOBBITON MOVIE SET & FARM TOURS -Take a guided tour to a working sheep farm where parts of The Lord of the Rings trilogy were filmed. See the hobbit holes.
BOATING/KAYAKING/JETSKI/CRUISE -Visit Lake Karapiro 15 minutes away for a day on the water. Kayaks available to hire on the lake or book a lake cruise.
MATAMATA AIRFIELD -A short drive for gliding and skydiving.
MATAMATA RACECOURSE -Watch some of New Zealand’s finest race horses train in the early mornings.
ARTS -Numerous artists in the district are keen to show their works.
FIRTH TOWER & MUSEUM -1.5km walk to get an insight into the area’s colonial farming activities.
